Q: How do I access the New York Times?
Answered by: Laura Galas

There are a number of ways you can access the New York Times from Yale Library, including from nytimes.com, through library databases, and print/microform access.

Access to NYTimes.com

Current Yale faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, and staff can sign up for a free subscription to nytimes.com. Note: Access is not available to YNHH employees.

To create your nytimes.com account:

  1. Sign into Yale's Cisco AnyConnect client with your Net ID and password (once registered, you will not be required to access using VPN).
  2. Go to https://nytimesineducation.com/access-nyt/.
  3. Type “Yale” in the box and then select Yale University from the dropdown menu.
  4. Even if you are off-campus, select the option, "On campus click here"
  5. Select Create Account.
  6. Sign in with your @yale.edu account.
  7. Select your Yale status (Student, Faculty/Staff, etc.)
  8. Select Login and you will be directed to nytimes.com.
  9. You can now log-out of Cisco VPN AnyConnect.

Your account also gives you access to The New York Times app for smartphones and tablets.

For information on re-registering your account, see our FAQ: "I lost my access to the New York Times. What should I do?"

Access through a library database

If you need archival access to the New York Times, or if you need Advanced Search functionality or to cite a newspaper article for a research paper, we recommend using database access.

Search for "New York Times" using Find Databases in Quicksearch.

Access in print or microform

The New York Times is also available on microform from 1851-2010.

If you have any questions about accessing the New York Times, please contact askyalelibrary@yale.edu.
