Q: If I am a visitor, how do I request a book in Orbis?
Answered by: Ro Ross

Visitors who have obtained a library card* from the Sterling Memorial Library Services Desk may request books by using the search bar located on the library homepage.

Search for the item you would like to request and click on the blue hyperlinked title in the results list. In the "Available from:" section, click the "Request for pickup" link for an available copy.

The next page will prompt you for login information in two ways. Use the "Visitor" section on the bottom half of the page. In the ID field, enter the VIS barcode that is printed at the bottom of your library card. Then, enter your last name as printed on the library card.

On the following page, select "Request staff search or delivery."

On the final page, verify the information of the item you are requesting. If you are requesting a specific volume from a multi-volume series, use the drop-down menu next to "Select a Copy." Choose Sterling or Bass as your pickup location. Re-enter your VIS barcode, and click "Submit."

After placing a request, you will receive an automated confirmation email and a second email to notify you that the book is available for pickup.

*To register for a library card, information on the various levels of library passes can be found here. Please remember to bring the required identification prior to arrival at the Sterling Library Services Desk.

**Yale affiliates who were issued a Yale ID card but no Yale NetID must register for their library account at the Sterling Library Services Desk. Upon registration, affiliates will receive a sticker for their ID card with their barcode information and must use the same Visitors procedure to request items.
