The Borrow Direct system will not allow you to place requests for items that the library believes to be available for checkout locally. If you are unable to find an item that should be on shelf, use the "request recall or delivery" link in Orbis to have a staff member search for the item. If the book is not found, it will be marked missing in the catalog, which will allow you to place a request through Borrow Direct.
